Finding a dream internship can be a challenging yet rewarding step in a college student’s career development. LinkedIn™, as a professional networking platform, offers a myriad opportunities for students to connect with potential employers, showcase their skills, and ultimately land an internship. 

Here’s a guide on how college students can leverage LinkedIn™ to find an internship and an opportunity to sign up for a free open career forum to get questions answered and resources.

1. Optimize Your Profile

Your LinkedIn™ profile serves as your digital resume and the first impression you make on potential employers. To stand out:

  • Use a Professional Photo: A clear, professional headshot can make your profile more inviting. Make sure you are dressing for the job you want.
  • Build a Custom Banner: Stand out with a personalized banner. It’s free and easy to build a banner on Canva as your billboard.
  • Craft a Compelling Headline: Instead of just listing your job title, include your career aspirations or areas of interest with a unique selling proposition (USP).
  • Detail Your Education and Skills: List your anticipated degree and completion date, major, relevant coursework, and skills. Adding projects or achievements can also catch an employer’s eye.
  • Customize Your URL: A personalized LinkedIn™ URL is easier to share and looks more professional on resumes or email signatures.

2. Build Your Network

Networking is crucial on LinkedIn™. Your NetWORK is your netWORTH, so make networking a habit. Start by connecting with:

  • Classmates, Professors, Alumni, Family, and Friends: Professionals can offer advice, recommend you for positions, share opportunities, and help you reach the critical milestone of having over 500 connections.
  • Professionals in Your Field of Interest: Engage with their content by liking, commenting, or sharing. This engagement can get you noticed, and commenting creates visibility, discoverability, and credibility.
  • Industry Groups and Associations: Joining these can help you stay informed about trends and connect with key professionals. If there is a trade show in an industry of interest, ask if you can volunteer and use your off time to network.

3. Use the LinkedIn™ Jobs Feature

LinkedIn™’s Jobs section allows you to search for internships using various filters like location, industry, and type of work. Tips for using the Jobs feature include:

  • Set Up Job Alerts: Receive notifications for new postings that match your interests and qualifications.
  • Apply Early: Being one of the first applicants can increase your chances of getting noticed.
  • Tailor Your Application: Customize every resume and cover letter for an application, highlighting relevant experience and skills, and use applicable keywords from the job description on your resume. Do not use an overly formatted resume or a template with tables if you apply online to large companies with applicant tracking systems.

4. Engage with Content and Share Your Own

Active participation on LinkedIn™ can increase your visibility:

  • Share Articles and Insights: Posting content related to your field can showcase your knowledge and interest.
  • Comment on Posts: Engaging with content from companies or professionals you’re interested in can get you noticed.
  • Publish Articles or Posts: Sharing your insights or experiences can establish you as a thoughtful and engaged industry member.

5. Reach Out Directly

Don’t be afraid to reach out to professionals or recruiters directly:

  • Send Personalized Connection Requests: When connecting with someone new, include a brief message about your interest in connecting.
