WHY LinkedIn for Entrepreneurs

Ahoy mateys! Are you there? When mentoring entrepreneurs or those starting or scaling a business, the question keeps coming up:

“Why LinkedIn for Entrepreneurs? Do I really need LinkedIn?”

The answer is no longer optional; it’s strategic.

Below is a clear breakdown of why LinkedIn matters, not just as a platform, but as a business tool that drives visibility, credibility, discoverability, and opportunity.

🚢 Why am I writing this article, “Captain Obvious”? ⚓

I have been on Score.org’s Speakers’ Bureau since 2013, and one chapter asked me to present this topic to their mentors at their monthly meeting. Why LinkedIn?

Since 2013, I have taught LinkedIn for several SCORE chapters in numerous states.

I thought about it and wondered if other SCORE chapters were thinking the same thing – Why LinkedIn?

What should the mentors tell their clients, and where can they send them to learn about LinkedIn for both for-profit and nonprofit organizations?

When I reviewed some profiles of SCORE mentors and leadership, my head was nodding up and down, thinking they need to attend the workshops, too!

We can all improve our profiles, and that includes ME!

Now that we’ve recognized the importance for everyone, including mentors, to improve their LinkedIn profiles, let’s explore the core reasons LinkedIn deserves your attention so you know WHY LINKEDIN!

1. The Shift: LinkedIn Is No Longer Optional

The way people evaluate businesses and professionals has fundamentally changed. Before any conversation happens, there is a search.

  • Digital first impressions happen before conversations
  • Buyers, partners, and clients research you before engaging
  • LinkedIn = today’s business card + website + credibility check
  • If you’re not there, you may be perceived as less credible or outdated

2. Visibility = Opportunity

Opportunities don’t just come from who you know, but may come from who can find you.

  • You cannot be chosen if you are not seen, so visibility matters
  • LinkedIn is a search engine for people + services
  • Shows up in Google search results (often top 3)
  • Passive discovery: opportunities come to you
  • Algorithms reward consistent presence in your area of subject matter expertise

3. Credibility & Trust at Scale

Trust is no longer built only in person; it’s established digitally before you ever speak.

  • Profile = proof of legitimacy
  • Social proof:
  1. Recommendations
  2. Endorsement
  3. Shared content
  4. Engagement with thought leadership (i.e., comments are king!)
  • Buyers trust people, not logos
  • Reduces skepticism before the first conversation

4. Your Personal Brand Drives Your Business

For entrepreneurs, your personal brand is often your strongest asset.

  • People buy from people they know, like, and trust
  • Founder branding on a company page is key (especially early stage)
  • You control your narrative (vs. others defining it)
  • Positions you as:
  1. Expert
  2. Thought leader
  3. Problem solver

5. Lead Generation Without Cold Calling

Traditional outreach is becoming less effective. Visibility changes the dynamic.

  • Inbound interest vs outbound chasing
  • Content acts as:
  1. Marketing
  2. Education
  3. Nurturing
  • Warm conversations vs cold outreach and introductions by others are gold
  • DMs become easier when visibility exists, and they can be text, voice, or video

6. Relationship Building at Scale

Networking is no longer limited by geography or time.

  • Networking beyond geography
  • Stay top-of-mind with your network
  • Engage before you need something
  • Build strategic partnerships, not just clients

7. Content = Long-Term Asset

Unlike a one-time conversation, content continues working long after it’s published.

  • Posts build a digital footprint
  • Your ideas live beyond the moment
  • Compounds over time (unlike networking events)
  • One post can:
  1. Attract clients
  2. Spark referrals
  3. Lead to speaking opportunities

8. Market Research & Social Listening Tool

LinkedIn is not just for broadcasting; it’s a powerful social listening tool.

  • Follow industry trends in real time
  • Understand customer pain points
  • Observe competitors (what works / what doesn’t)
  • Validate ideas before launching

9. Talent & Collaboration Magnet

People are drawn to visible, active professionals and leaders.

  • Attract:
  1. Employees
  2. Contractors
  3. Partners
  4. Vendors
  5. Alliances
  6. Sponsors
  7. Donors, volunteers, and board members for nonprofits
  8. Board members for organizations
  • People want to work with visible, active leaders
  • Easier recruiting without job postings

10. Career Insurance for Entrepreneurs

Businesses evolve, pivot, or sometimes fail, but your professional presence should not.

  • Businesses pivot, fail, or evolve
  • Your LinkedIn profile travels with you
  • Builds long-term professional equity
  • Keeps doors open beyond the current venture

11. Local + Global Reach

LinkedIn lets you operate both locally and globally simultaneously.

  • Hyper-local visibility (community, events, referrals)
  • Global access to clients and opportunities
  • Especially powerful for:
  1. Consultants
  2. Coaches
  3. Service providers

12. SEO & Discoverability Advantage

Your LinkedIn profile is often one of the most powerful SEO tools you have.

  • Profiles rank highly on Google
  • Keywords matter (services, industries, problems solved)
  • LinkedIn acts as:
  1. Personal SEO engine
  2. Free visibility channel

13. Low Cost, High ROI Marketing Channel

For entrepreneurs, especially early-stage, cost matters—and LinkedIn delivers.

  • No ad spend required to start
  • Organic reach is still viable
  • Time investment vs financial investment
  • Ideal for:
  1. Startups, especially those that need an online presence, before they build a website.
  2. Solopreneurs
  3. Early-stage businesses

14. Differentiation in Crowded Markets

Most people are on LinkedIn (like 1.3+ B), but very few use it strategically.

  • Most profiles are incomplete or weak
  • Strong profiles stand out immediately
  • Clear messaging = faster trust + conversion
  • Opportunity to position vs compete

15. The Risk of NOT Being on LinkedIn

Choosing not to be on LinkedIn is not neutral; it carries real consequences.

  • Missed opportunities you never see
  • Lack of credibility during vetting
  • Invisible to referrals and introductions
  • Others control your narrative (or you don’t exist)

Final Thought

LinkedIn is no longer about job searching. It is about visibility, credibility, and opportunity.

For entrepreneurs and those thinking about starting a business, the question is no longer:

“Should I be on LinkedIn?” or “Why LinkedIn?”

It’s:

“Am I using LinkedIn strategically enough to be seen, trusted, and chosen?”

Now you know … WHY LINKEDIN!
