Chemical Reactions: A Metaphor for Life & Your Career

About her third year in college as a ChE major, it occurred to Lori that most of her classes were similar. The equations were slightly different, but they were all about balance-heat balance, mass, balance, fluid, flow, and energy balance. Even chemical reactions had to be balanced. Learning this helped her be successful in her curriculum and graduate as a ChE. But chemical reactions drew her in, and when she decided to get her PhD, she wanted to focus on Chemical Reaction engineering.
Chemical reactions had to be balanced, but there was so much more, including atoms, molecules, and formulas. How can an element behave completely differently in one situation than in another? The heat of reaction, enthalpy, exothermic, endothermic, and molecular orbitals fascinated her. Even now, 30+ years later she remembers so much that she can help her college-aged son with his chemistry classes.
As she left corporate America and her work as a chemical engineer, she started a new business that was not based on science and technology. Yet she found that what she learned in chemical reaction engineering classes was still so valuable. Chemical reactions can be a metaphor for life and careers. Balance is key, we have to overcome inertia and activation energy to get going and so much more.
In this talk, we will explore how Chemical Reactions are a metaphor for life and career, and what we all learned in chemistry class can serve us in business, whether it is technical or not.
